Lego's latest 'Star Wars' mega set goes to the Dark Side
That’s no moon! It’s also not a space station, for that matter. What you’re seeing is an Imperial Star Destroyer made by the brickheads at Lego. And not just any Star Destroyer: this is the Devastator model glimpsed in the classic opening scene of Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope. You know the one: the elongated spacecraft that’s pursuing the fleeing Rebel Tantive IV starship carrying Princess Leia, a pair of droids and the all-important Death Star plans that represent the Rebellion’s last best ... well, hope.
Arriving in stores on Oct. 1, the Ultimate Collector Series Imperial Star Destroyer is a 4,784-brick behemoth that replicates the Devastator down to the smallest detail — from tilting radar dish to the surface cannons. In addition to the Star Destroyer, the set comes with a scale version of the Rebel spacecraft, just to drive home how puny their chances of success seem compared to the massive might of the Empire.
Also included are a pair of Imperial minifigs with blaster pistol weapons, and a display stand with informational plaque. The set retails for $699.99, but you’ll easily earn that back — and more — with a lifetime of open-jawed looks of admiration from your fellow Star Wars obsessives.
