Lil Wayne Receives Key To City Of New Orleans, Says Super Bowl Halftime Show Was “Ripped Away” From Him
Lil Wayne apparently hasn’t gotten over being snubbed from performing at the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, as the rap star believes the opportunity was “ripped away” from him.
During his annual Lil WeezyAna Fest on Saturday (Nov. 2) in New Orleans, the 42-year-old expressed his discontent over seemingly being overlooked as the halftime show performer in favor of Kendrick Lamar, who was announced as the show’s headliner back in September.
“I’m usually real, real good with words,” he told the crowd. “I think y’all know that sometime coming, there will be a Super Bowl in this city.
“When the first Super Bowl was here, I made sure I bought tickets at the beginning of the season. And I did the same when I moved to Miami. I was hoping my team made it and guess who made it? The muthaf**kin Saints.”
He continued, recalling the moment he prioritized performing at the Super Bowl on his list of goals, which he feels he’s deserving of, giving his list of achievements and accolades.
“I was able to give my mama that suite [in the stadium] and she was able to bring the family and other people from New Orleans and they had a f**kin’ ball,” Weezy added.
“I said to myself, ‘I want to be onstage for the Super Bowl one day, in front of my mom.’ And I worked my a** off to get that f**kin’ position. It was ripped away from me.”
However, he concluded by basking in the moment, in front of his hometown fans, declaring, “But this moment right here — they can’t take that away from me.”
Lil Wayne was also awarded the key to the city of New Orleans during Lil WeezyAna Fest, which was presented to the rapper by New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell.
“On behalf of your city, the entire city of New Orleans, I’m so proud to present you with this key that is a token of appreciation of who you are,” Mayor Cantrell said. “This is your city saying to you, ‘You matter for generations to come — for what you have done, what you are doing and what you will continue to do.’”
In addition, No Limit Records founder and fellow New Orleans native Master P appeared onstage to announce that Feb. 7 has been declared Lil Wayne Day and that Weezy will be the first rapper to be inducted into the NOLA Walk of Fame.
