Lindsey Shaw Looks Back on Her 'Toxic' Friendships: 'Becomes Codependence'

The ‘Pretty Little Liars’ alum is looking back on how her past struggles caused her to form friendships that were “manic outlets”

Lindsey Shaw is sharing how her past struggles impacted her friendships, saying that she sought out people who were were “manic outlets” for her.

During a discussion on friendships on the recent episode of Ned’s Declassified Podcast, which she cohosts with former Ned's Declassified costars Devon Werkheiser and Daniel Curtis Lee, Shaw said that “I'm one of those who — I always have these really intense one-on-one connections with people. I've never had a huge group of friends.”

Shaw, 35, continued, saying the friendships “are really taxing…when you become the end all, be all — your friendship just becomes codependence. It just becomes, like, sort of answering that codependent bell in your head.”

She said that “I had no idea who I was. I had no idea what I liked. All I knew was, like, ‘I don't like being here alone by myself. Like, let's smoke something.' You know what I mean?’ “

The Pretty Little Liars alum has been open about her addition struggles in the past, sharing that she’s been placed on a psychiatric hold twice, and overdosed.

“I had been taking Adderall all day, drinking tequila from the bottle. I poured my Xanax prescription out in my hand, plus a few extra pills that I had combined bottles for, and I just [poured them all in my mouth],” she’s shared.

She connected her past additions to her friendship struggles on the podcast, saying, “I was blind because I was in so much pain. I feel like I was just blind to what was going on. I was blind to, you know, how to get the help that I actually needed in my life.”

She continued: “I didn't know how to talk to my family. So, like, these friends were really just these sort of, like, manic outlets.”

Calling them, “very intense, very toxic, but very close,” Shaw said she has no regrets.

“For better or for worse, like, I will never forget them.”
