Live-Action (!?) Rugrats Movie In the Works From SNL’s Mikey Day
One of Nickelodeon’s Best Shows of All Time is headed back to the big screen — but in an entirely new (and unexpected) format.
Our sister site Deadline reports that a live-action, CGI hybrid Rugrats movie is in development. Mikey Day co-wrote the script with Saturday Night Live scribe Streeter Seidell; Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) is on board to direct.

While further details surrounding the Nicktoon’s jump to live-action are scarce — Variety suggests that the babies will be CGI but exist in the “real world” — Deadline notes that this latest extension of the franchise is “unlike any film or show” that came before it.
The original Rugrats debuted in 1991 alongside fellow animated series Doug and Ren & Stimpy — aka the original Nicktoons. The series followed the day-to-day lives of an adventurous band of toddlers, led by diaper-clad Tommy Pickles. It ran until 2004, tallying up a total of 172 episodes. In that time, a trilogy of big-screen movies were released: 1998’s The Rugrats Movie, 2000’s Rugrats in Paris and 2003’s Rugrats Go Wild (which also featured characters from fellow Nicktoon The Wild Thornberrys). It also spawned a sequel series, All Grown Up, which followed the Rugrats into teenagehood; five seasons were produced between 2003 and 2008.
In 2021, Nickelodeon revived the Rugrats franchise with a CG-animated reboot for Paramount+. It has since been scrubbed from the streaming platform as part of a content purge, with previously unreleased episodes unspooling on the Nicktoons cable network.
