Liza Weil's Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Character is A lot Like her Gilmore Girls Character
All the Paris Geller fans out there should start getting excited now. Liza Weil, who portrayed the legendary character through all seven seasons of "Gilmore Girls," is now set to take on a new role in "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," creator Amy Sherman-Palladino's new show.
In the new show, Weil's character will be named Carole, but the good news for fans of Paris Geller is, she's not that different from Weil's "Gilmore Girls" character. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
The third season of "Maisel" will see the titular stand-up comedian hit the road with Shy Baldwin, and Carole will be a musician in Shy's band that Midge befriends early on in the tour. Midge, who has never lived on the road before, will have a lot to learn from Carole about how to do it successfully, even while being a mother.
That's right, Carole will be a mother of three, and she apparently tells Midge that she can already tell one of her kids is going to be a "huge asshole."
In addition to motherhood, Carole will also deploy logic ruthlessly in the same way that Paris often did on "Gilmore Girls." Carole is also committed to her work above all else. When Midge asks her whether she misses her children, she admits that she does, but not enough for her to settle down and raise them permanently.
Her calling is to be on the road, and it's easy to see how Midge might find some kinship in another mother who is laser-focused on their work.
Like many of the main players on "Maisel," Carole is also a pretty overtly feminist character. Although she admits that she misses her kids, she balks at the notion that traveling constantly for work might make her a bad mother.
She points out the double standard inherent in that question, as plenty of men travel for work and are never asked how they manage to be good mothers. Paris Geller would very much approve of that kind of interrogation of norms.
Adding more female energy to "Maisel" can only be a good thing. The show often thrives on its ability to combine two great actresses and watch sparks fly. Liza Weil was always a standout performer during her time on "Gilmore Girls," and it's easy to imagine that the same will be true on "Maisel."
The show is set to return today for its third season, which will pick up with Midge after she decided to leave her comfortable life and try to make it as a standup comedian.
