Lizzo Files To Dismiss “Meritless” Sexual Harassment Lawsuit
Lizzo has filed to get her former employee’s harassment and misconduct lawsuit dismissed. Deadline reported that the singer’s legal documents were submitted on Friday (Dec. 15).
The ex-employee, Asha Daniels, previously sued the Special artist for racial and sexual harassment, disability discrimination, illegal retaliatory termination, and assault. Martin Singer, Lizzo’s lawyer, denounced Daniels’ suit and called her claims “meritless.”
Singer also referred to Daniels as a “disgruntled” employee who “refused to comply with instructions [and] failed to perform the spark that she assigned and, eventually, just played hooky and refused to show up for work.” The document alleged that the wardrobe designer was terminated after abandoning her post on the day of a concert in Paris.
Additionally, Lizzo’s suit argued that Asha’s claims held no legal weight due to the designer filing in California. The musician’s team asserted that she was a New York resident employed by a Delaware corporation in Europe.
Ron Zambrano, Asha Daniels’ lawyer, responded to the motion. Zambrano described the move as a way to “shift blame to the victims.”
“This motion was expected and is yet another Hail Mary by Lizzo’s team to try to shift blame to the victims, as she has done to the three other plaintiffs who have sued her for similar allegations of harassment, disability discrimination, and retaliatory termination,” the statement read. “Lizzo and her lawyers can continue trying to rationalize her illegal and wretched conduct but we remain committed to seeking justice for our clients and look forward to our day in court where Lizzo can explain her behavior in a public forum.”
Asha Daniels began working for the singer in January. Daniels designed the wardrobe for Lizzo’s 2023 Special Tour. Her September suit detailed how she expected a “healthy, diverse environment with virtues of respect and empowerment of women [but] unfortunately, the opposite turned out to be true.”
“The following experiences of degradation, forced physical labor, denial of medical care, sexual harassment, and racial harassment were allowed to take place by Lizzo’s management without consequence because she is a Black woman,” her suit read.
