Lizzo posts Instagram video surprising her mom with new car for Christmas: 'Got you an Audi, girl!'
Lizzo knows how to bring Christmas joy, surprising her mother with a new car and posting the joyous unveiling on Instagram Sunday.
The "Cuz I Love You" singer, 32, filmed as her mother, Shari Johnson-Jefferson, was led outside to find the black Audi in the driveway with a big red bow on it. Johnson-Jefferson broke down into happy tears when she opened her eyes.
"Got my mommy a brand new Audi for Xmas," Lizzo wrote on Instagram next to the video. She explained, "I remember crying in my car when my daddy passed, no job no money nowhere to live, wishing I could one day provide for my family."
Lizzo wrote that she couldn't help out her father, who died in 2009. So she is making "sure I spoil Mama."
In the video, as Johnson-Jefferson looks on shocked, Lizzo said, "Got you an Audi, girl!"
"You see these things on television and you never expect them to happen to you," Johnson-Jefferson said, walking toward the car.
Lizzo, born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, told CBS The Morning in January that she was attending the University of Houston on a music scholarship studying classical flute when her father died in 2009.
"I didn't feel like I had a purpose for being a musician or anything. So that turned into, 'Oh, can I sleep on your couch,' and that eventually, I got really guilt ridden. So all I had was this car. It was a Subaru," she said. "That was my home for a little. I spent Thanksgiving in that car, and I remember I cried myself to sleep."
Lizzo tweeted last New Year's Eve that, with the success of her hit album "Cuz I Love You," she was able to turn her fortunes around in a decade. So 2019 was "the year I told my mama I can buy her a house. Anything can happen in a decade," she wrote.
2020 is now the year Lizzo was able to buy her mother the new car.
