Long shelved Wilmington-shot horror film starring Russell Crowe finally gets release date

It's not quite "Bolden," the Wilmington-shot move that took 12 years to make, but it's getting there.

According to multiple published entertainment industry reports, "The Exorcism," a movie that shot in Wilmington in 2019 under the name "The Georgetown Project," will finally be released in theaters June 7.

According to Deadline and other publications, the film's rights were purchased from the Miramax film studio by Vertical, an independent film producer.

A trailer for the film dropped April 25.

Not much Wilmington is visible in it, but you can see a good bit of the studio lot at what was EUE/Screen Gems off 23rd Street, which was bought by Cinespace Studios last year and has since been rebranded.

Directed by Joshua John Miller, "The Exorcism" is about an actor, played by Crowe, shooting a film that's similar to horror classic "The Exoricist." When the actor begins acting strangely, it's not clear if he's succumbing to former addictions or if there's something more sinister afoot.

Interestingly, Crowe played a priest in horror film "The Pope's Exorcism," which came out last year.

One of the initial producers of "The Exorcism" was Kevin Williamson, creator of both "Dawson's Creek," the teen drama series that shot here in the late '90s and early 2000s, and horror franchise "Scream," the fifth installment of which shot in Wilmington in 2020.

“It’s like coming home,” Williamson told the StarNews during an event announcing "The Exorcism" at EUE/Screen Gems Studios, now Cinespace Studios, in 2019.
