Take a look at backstage preparations for the 91st Texas Rose Festival
TYLER, Texas (KETK) — With just a few days before the 91st Texas Rose Festival, KETK News took a closer look at backstage preparations and interviewed costume and set designer Jacob A. Climer.
Texas Rose Festival events, details you need to know about
Right now, Climer and the crew are making the final touches and examining every detail. However, Climer said in order to bring his creations to life, the process began more than a year ago at his studio in New York City.
“It’s such a treat to see so many people’s work come to fruition and bring so much joy and, it’s so great to be able to see if my crazy ideas work,” Climer said. “It takes 18 months, I started next years festival last July.”
One of the most anticipated moments for this year’s festival are the dress reveals. Though Climer declined to provide many details of the queen’s dress, he said the dress weighs around 60 pounds with a 70 pound train.
Texas Rose Festival to include weekend arts, crafts fair
“I mean there’s five to 10 kilos of beads and thousands of grosses of rhinestones, 40 to 60 yards of fabric,” Climer said.
Each design holds hours of research to bring this year’s theme “Fanfare of Festivals” to life.
“This year, we wanted to lean into some period, some style from festivals around the world. So there’s a lot of bunting, lanterns, glands. There is a lot of fabric and not a lot of scenic elements. So that’s the world we landed on,” Climer said. “I wanted it to feel a little more 1960’s.”
His designs will be on display first at the coronation at UT Tyler with two shows Friday evening at the Cowan center. Tune in to KETK News at 8:30 a.m. to watch the rose parade live on Saturday.
