In June 2022, Durek Verrett, an American “spiritual guide” based in Los Angeles, popped the question and asked Princess M?rtha Louise to marry him with a dazzling engagement ring. The Brazilian emerald and diamond ring took roughly six months to design, and Verrett worked closely with jewelry designer Joy Sangalang Smith of Communion to create the piece.

Emeralds are a symbolic gemstone, which represent loyalty and new beginnings. The emerald also served as a way for the couple to honor Princess M?rtha Louise’s mother, Queen Sonja, who favors emerald pieces.

The design of the ring features an emerald at the center of the jewelry piece. Surrounding the gemstone in a square shape are a series of diamonds framing the emerald, representing the four natural elements of water, earth, fire and air. The ring also includes three diamonds, which reportedly represent Princess M?rtha Louise’s three daughters from her first marriage to Ari Behn — Maud Angelica, Leah Isadora and Emma Tallulah.

Princess M?rtha Louise’s engagement ring inspiration and homage to her mother was spot-on. Queen Sonja has been a longtime fan of emeralds, so much so that one tiara in Norway’s royal family features the gemstone most prominently.

Among the tiaras in the Norwegian royal family’s vault, none compare to the Norwegian Emerald Parure Tiara. The tiara dates to the 1800s, and features diamonds and emeralds with cluster, festoon, anthemion, floral, and scroll elements. The tiara also comes with a coordinated necklace, earrings and brooch. Queen Sonja has been wearing the pieces since the 1960s.

The tiara also comes with options for the center gemstone, including a diamond and gold piece, a diamond and green tourmaline and a diamond and topaz. Queen Sonja wore the diamond and topaz combination during a state banquet in Romania in September 1999.
