Everything We Know About the ‘Office’ Spin-off
Ever since The Office dropped its series finale in 2013, fans of the sitcom have been hoping for a reboot. Can you blame them? The show delivered nine seasons of pure comedy gold. It launched the careers of Mindy Kaling, John Krasinski, and Ellie Kemper. It gave us this meme. It taught us about the horrors of nepotism and the beauty of a choreographed wedding entrance. It was perfect.
Though some fans have been anti-reboot—they want the show to be preserved in all its glory—I identify with the ones who want more episodes, high jinks, and workplace relationships we grew to know and love. If you feel the same way as I do, rejoice—because our wish has been granted. Sort of. Peacock ordered a new television comedy from Greg Daniels, who adapted The Office for the U.S. (the series originated in the UK), and Nathan for You co-creator Michael Koman.
Here’s everything we know about the new series.
What the Hell Is It?
Here’s the gist of the new series, per a press release from NBC: “The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.” Lisa Katz, the president of NBC Entertainment, added, “This new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling.”
Those new characters? Well, according to Deadline, Domhnall Gleeson (The Patient) and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus) will lead the ensemble. We don’t have any casting details otherwise.
The show’s name is a mystery, but my money’s on The Other Office. More knee-jerk thoughts: Taking the focus far away from Scranton certainly cuts down on the chances of cameos from any of our friends from The Office. Unless someone needs to order a large quantity of paper...
When Will It Come Out?
The release date has not been announced. Patience, people! However, the production process should ramp up any minute now that NBC has officially greenlit the project. In the meantime, Katz spoke about the lasting impact of The Office. “It’s been more than ten years since the final episode of The Office aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock,” she said.
