“Lord of the Rings” cast reunion unites Elijah Wood with fellow hobbits Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd
The trio shared a meal and drinks in a sweet photo 23 years after they first starred in "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring."
A lucky restaurant was hoppin' with hobbits when three Lord of the Rings franchise stars recently held a mini cast reunion over drinks and a meal.
In a sweet Instagram post on Sunday, LOTR series actor Dominic Monaghan shared a photo of himself seated at a table with his fellow stars Elijah Wood and Billy Boyd — all of whom played hobbits in director Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning blockbuster adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved fantasy novels.
"Some things never change," Monaghan wrote in the image's caption, alongside his friends lifting their drinks for a toast.
The reunion came 23 years after the trio first appeared in The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001. They would go on to co-star in all three of Jackson's LOTR projects, also including 2002's The Two Towers and 2003's The Return of the King, which won Best Picture (and 10 other statuettes) at the 2004 Oscars. It also followed another cast reunion that Wood, Monaghan, and Boyd shared with LOTR star Orlando Bloom, who played the elf Legolas in all three films, in May.
“3 hobbits and an elf and the CONVERSATION tonight was VAULTED,” Monaghan captioned a shot of the foursome at the time.
Wood led the movie series as Frodo Baggins, who inherits the titular ring from his uncle, Bilbo, and embarks on a quest (with help from other hobbits, like Monaghan's Merry and Boyd's Pippin) to destroy it.

In May, Warner Bros. announced that a slate of two new Lord of the Rings movies would feature Jackson returning as producer alongside longtime collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, signaling a continuation of the franchise on the big screen.
Jackson earlier expanded on the story with a Hobbit prequel trilogy following Martin Freeman as Bilbo.

On the small screen, Amazon launched season 2 of its Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power TV series on Thursday.
"We're also going to be the fans taking in what I know, even without having seen it, is the most epic battle sequence that we have coming up for season 2," star Cynthia Addai-Robinson told Entertainment Weekly in a preview of new episodes. "It feels really cinematic this season. You know in the first season that was the case as well, but I just think we've got to top ourselves, and I feel like we've done that. So I'm excited just to watch it myself."
