The trailer was unveiled during the 2024 San Diego Comic Con to celebrate the return of the epic drama set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” books.

The official synopsis reads: Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared reemergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone. With Sauron, after being cast out by Galadriel, without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-Earth to his sinister will.

In addition to returning core cast ensemble members, Gabriel Akuwudike, Yasen Atour, Amelia Kenworthy, Nia Towle, Ben Daniels, Nicholas Woodeson, and Sam Hazeldine join the show.

The show made history on the streaming platform upon its debut. Season 1 was viewed by more than 100 million people worldwide and drove more Prime sign-ups worldwide during its launch window than any other previous content to date, per a press statement.

The second season is produced by showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, who are joined by executive producers Lindsey Weber, Callum Greene, Justin Doble, Jason Cahill, and Gennifer Hutchinson, along with co-executive producer Charlotte Brandstr?m, producers Kate Hazell and Helen Shang, and co-producers Andrew Lee, Matthew Penry-Davey, and Clare Buxton.

In addition to the series, the “Lord of the Rings” franchise expands with film trilogy alum Andy Serkis directing Warner Bros.’ “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” which is set for a 2026 release. Additionally, the upcoming animated feature “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” also had a recent first look.

“Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” premieres August 29 on Prime Video. Check out the trailer below.
