Lorde Supports #MeToo Movement With Quote Sewn Into Grammy Dress
While many on the Grammy red carpet chose to support the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements by wearing white roses, Lorde made her own statement.
The singer, nominated for album of the year with “Melodrama,” posted a shot of the back of her dress on Instagram, where she attached a quote from Jenny Holzer’s “Inflammatory Essays.”
“Rejoice! Our times are intolerable. Take coverage for the worst is a harbinger of the best. Only dire circumstance can precipitate the overthrow of oppressors. The old and corrupt must be laid to waste before the just can triumph. Contradiction will be heightened. The reckoning will be hastened by the staging of seed disturbances. The apocalypse will blossom,” the quote reads.
Lorde captioned that the decision to sew the statement into her red Valentino dress was her “version of the white rose.” She is the only woman nominated in the album of the year category, and was not offered a solo performance spot, while her fellow nominees were.
The 60th annual Grammys return to New York this Sunday for the first time in 15 years and feature performances from nominees Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars, Kesha, and Pink. The show will be broadcast live from Madison Square Garden at 4:30 p.m. PT/7:30 p.m. ET on CBS. “The Late Late Show” host Corden returns to emcee the ceremony for a second year.
