Cinemark hosting Oscar? Movie Week Festival
Cinemark Holdings, Inc., is bringing the most prestigious Hollywood films of 2023 to auditoriums across the nation with the return of its annual Oscar? Movie Week festival.
In theaters from Monday, March 4 through Sunday, March 10, Oscar? Movie Week makes it easy for moviegoers to catch up on the celebrated Best Picture and Live Action and Animated Short Film nominees with a convenient, all-inclusive festival pass for the true cinephiles, as well as single showtime tickets for those interested in select titles.
The festival is being held at more than 120 participating Cinemark theaters nationwide in advance of the 96th Oscars?, which airs March 10 on ABC. Festival passes and individual tickets are on sale now at Cinemark.com/movieweek.
The festival pass allows moviegoers to fully experience the most cinematic moments of the year with the convenience of one easily accessible ticket. For only $40, the pass grants access to showtimes for all participating Oscar? film nominees and comes with a glittering 50% discount on any size popcorn during the festival week, as no cinematic experience is complete without the gold star of movie theater snacks.
Tickets for the feature-length Best Picture nominees are available at standard pricing, with showtimes beginning on Monday, March 4. All Live Action and Animated Short Film nominees are bundled into one $10 viewing, available Friday, March 8 through Sunday, March 10.

Rolling Stones tribute coming to Cactus
Satisfaction - The International Rolling Stones Tribute will be live at Cactus Theater at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 7.
This show is entering its 22nd year in production with more than 4,000 performances to their credit. Performing up to 150 shows a year, this highly acclaimed production showcases the most authentic cast and costuming of its kind.
The likes of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and cast bring a colorful performance to over 50 years of classic hits.

Twitty and Lynn return to Cactus
A salute to Conway and Loretta returns to the Cactus Theater at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 8.
Country music duo Twitty and Lynn perform the songs of their grandparents Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn and tell intimate family stories.
Tayla is Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter - and she is whimsical and fantastic singing her Memaw’s Grammy-winning songs, telling touching - and many times, comical - stories of what it was like on tour with Memaw.
Tre is Conway Twitty’s grandson and on stage makes us feel as tho his “Poppy” is back with us. Tre has the same relaxed, smooth delivery as his grandfather and surprises us with a song that allows an audience participation that is memorable.

Viva Aztlan 2024 scheduled
Viva Aztlan 2024 is set for Saturday March 9, at Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Theater, 1501 Mac Davis Lane.
Viva Aztlan Festival is filled with folklorico competitions. It is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
Saturday evening at 7 p.m. will feature a showcase by Best of Festival 2023 winner Ballet Folklorico de Alvaro Mu?oz from Abilene. A Mariachi concert will follow featuring Mariachi Los Caporales from San Antonio.
The evening will represent what this festival embraces, which is to continue to educate the community about the richness of the Mexican Mestizo culture through music and dance.

Queen tribute coming to Holly Hall
Killer Queen: A Queen Tribute is set to perform at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at the Helen Devitt Jones Theater of Buddy Holly Hall.
Killer Queen’s first public shows were at London University, following in the footsteps of the real Queen who had played their first shows there decades earlier. Killer Queen’s UK popularity grew to such an extent they soon secured a residency in London’s Strand Theatre attracting nationwide BBC coverage – the first tribute to have a show in the West End.
The band’s reputation continued to grow both in the UK and abroad leading to an awards ceremony in Leicester Square, hosted by Suggs from Madness who presented them with the award for “Worldwide Best Tribute Band”. They also scored a number one hit when they were asked to recreate Queen’s harmonies for “The Real Life” with Fatboy Slim.

Fair Theater presents Spring Break Movies
PLAINVIEW - The Fair Theater presents the Spring Break Movies Days on Tuesday, March 12, and Thursday, March 14.
Movies scheduled for the program include "Wreck It Ralph" on March 12 and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" on March 14. Show times for each movie are 2 and 6 p.m.

Cactus to screen 'The Quiet Man'
Cactus Classic Cinema presents "The Quiet Man" (1952) for a 2 p.m. matinee and then again at 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13 at the Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Ave.
Unrated, "The Quiet Man" is an American romantic comedy-drama film directed and produced by John Ford, and starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Victor McLaglen, Barry Fitzgerald, and Ward Bond.
The film was an official selection of the 1952 Venice Film Festival. John Ford won the Academy Award for Best Director, his fourth, and Winton Hoch won for Best Cinematography. In 2013, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

AC/DC tribute coming to Cactus stage
Noise Pollution: The AC/DC Experience comes to the Cactus Theater stage at 7:3o p.m. Friday, March 15.
AC/DC fans can celebrate because Noise Pollution pays tribute to the Aussie heavyweights of rock ’n’ roll. Based in San Diego, Noise Pollution delivers an amazing replication of the AC/DC concert experience from both the Bon Scott and Brian Johnson periods. Fronted by Francis Crouse on vocals and Curt Fischer on lead guitar, Noise Pollution presents a chronological look into the music of AC/DC. Because of the monumental nature of their predecessors’ vocals and guitar work, this is a rare and impressive accomplishment.

Journey brings Freedom Tour to USA
Classic rock group Journey brings is Freedom Tour 2024 to the Hub City on Friday, March 22, at United Supermarkets Arena.

Formed in San Francisco in 1973, the band as of 2024 consists of guitarist/vocalist Neal Schon (the last remaining original member), keyboardist/guitarist/vocalist Jonathan Cain and keyboardist/vocalist Jason Derlatka, drummer/vocalist Deen Castronovo, bassist Todd Jensen, and lead vocalist Arnel Pineda.

Texas Blues legend to perform at Cactus
Jimmie Vaughan, Texas Blues legend, is set to perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at the Cactus Theater.
In true Texas fashion, four-time Grammy-winner Vaughan has helped breathe new life into the music that has been his lifeline all these decades, becoming a hero to those who cherish America’s real gift to musical history.
Last fall, to help celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the first of the "Blues, Ballads and Favorites" albums, "The Pleasure's All Mine" compiled both albums as a collection, and was released alongside a vinyl re-issue of 2016’s "Jimmie Vaughan Trio" featuring Mike Flanigan "Live at C-Boys" release, which featured songs recorded at the venerable Austin nightspot that Vaughan and crew call home when they are in town.
Special guest will be 20-year-old Mathias Lattin, who won first place at the 2023 International Blues Challenge in the band category and was awarded Best Guitarist by the judges. Lattin is an emerging young Texas guitarist and product of the acclaimed Kinder High School for Performing and Visual Arts.

Flatlands Dance presents 'The Roaring 20s'
Flatlands Dance Theatre presents "The Roaring ‘20s: Glitz, Glam, Music, and Dance of the Jazz Age" at 7:30 p.m. on March 29 and 30 at the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts Firehouse Theater.
Flatlands Dance Theatre invites audiences to travel back to the 1920’s through music and dance. Sit back with a drink in hand and prepare to be swept away by a jazz ensemble accompanied by thrilling, cabaret-style dances representing the 20’s in America.

Gilmore to perform at Cactus
Jimmie Dale Gilmore returns to the Cactus Theater stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 29, with special guests West Texas Exiles.
Gilmore has been writing and playing songs for more than 50 years. His music eludes categorization - blending elements of folk, rock, country, blues and bluegrass. His recordings have earned three Grammy nominations in both Contemporary Folk and Traditional Folk categories and he was named Country Artist of the Year three years running by Rolling Stone magazine.
His high and lonesome vocal style, coupled with sometimes mystical and poetic lyrics, has led to musical brandings such as Sagebrush Soul, Zen Country and Western Beat. Along with Joe Ely and Butch Hancock, Gilmore’s legendary band The Flatlanders has been credited as fathers of the alt-country movement.
With influences from The Flatlanders and Buddy Holly to Vampire Weekend and Jason Isbell, opening act West Texas Exiles are re-invigorating the music scene with a modern interpretation of the Lone Star vernacular. Though they met in Austin, three of the members grew up in Lubbock: Eric Harrison, Trinidad Leal and Colin Gilmore (Jimmie Dale's son). Singer Marco Gutierrez (formerly of Dirty River Boys) grew up in El Paso and singer/keyboard player Daniel Davis hails from Amarillo.

Collective pays tribute to G'n'R, Eagles

Green, Morrow featured at Team Luke for Hope concert
Team Luke Hope for Minds is ready to bring back the boys of Texas Country at our Inspiring Hope Concert.The event is set for 8:30 p.m. April 3, at United Supermarkets Arena.
Opening the evening, the Hub City Drifters, a group of collective members in the Lubbock country music scene paying homage to classic country greats, Panhandle heroes, and West Texas legends.
Headliners will be Pat Green, a Grammy nominated singer/songwriter with his long-time friend, Cory Morrow. Pat has sold more than two million records and had several Top Ten hits on the Billboard Country Radio chart and twelve No. 1 hits on Texas Radio.
Cory Morrow, also a Texas native singer/songwriter has sold over 200,000 albums independently and his 2002 release "Outside the Lines" reached No. 28 on Billboard's Country Album chart. In an interview in 2020, Cory said he wants his music to give people "Hope and let them know that they're loved."
Pat and Cory attended Texas Tech University and played many of Lubbock's local bars. Back in 2001, they released an album together called “Songs We Wish We'd Written” that debuted on three Billboard Charts in the first week.

SPC’s Groove Day to feature Robinson
LEVELLAND – The South Plains College Commercial Music Department will host its second-annual Groove Day, featuring the world’s most recorded drummer, John JR Robinson. The event will begin at 10 a.m. on April 6 at the Tom T. Hall Production Studio in the Creative Arts Building on campus. Admission to Groove Day is free.
Robinson’s work is featured on hits by talented artists including Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, The Weeknd and many more.
Groove Day will be sponsored by DW Drums, Aquarian Drumheads, Paiste Cymbals, Remo Drumheads and Innovative Percussion. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early when the doors open at 9:30 a.m. to register for sponsor prize drawings.
The event will then start with a free masterclass by Phillip Smith, SPC director of percussion in commercial music, followed by Robinson’s masterclass.
Ahead of Groove Day, attendees can register to participate in the Groove Contest that will take place at 1:30 p.m. Each contestant will perform five compulsory grooves as well as a groove of their choice. A panel of judges will award prizes to the winners. Participation will be limited, but all ages and experience levels are encouraged to participate. Registration can be completed at https://www.spccreativearts.com/grooveday/ and will be first come, first served.
At 3 p.m., attendees can participate in a Q&A session with Robinson. Following this session, he will conduct a private masterclass at 5 p.m. Students with valid IDs from SPC and other schools can participate in the private masterclass at the cost of $50, and non-students can participate at the cost of $100. Space will be limited.
