Lucy Liu starred in the 2000 and 2003 Charlie’s Angels films, and although the film series was popular, Liu doesn’t think a third film will ever happen.

Speaking during an appearance at the Variety Studio, Liu said that even though her co-star Cameron Diaz has returned to acting after a long hiatus, she doesn’t think it’s “feasible” for a third film to happen.

“I honestly don’t know how that’s going to be feasible,” Liu said. “There have been so many iterations, even after the fact … In some ways, it’s such a strange thing to think about it. Times have changed so much since then.”

Liu went on to say that at the time of the film’s releases, three huge female stars sharing the screen wasn’t commonplace. She said that she’d be “shocked” if a third film happened, but that she will always enjoy her time with the franchise.

“At that time, when we were doing publicity, they had never before had three women on a magazine cover,” said Liu. “They didn’t even know how to do it. It was such a strange thing for women to collaborate and be seen as colleagues and friends. It was such a big moment in time, and now it’s shifted. Even when I was doing ‘Ally McBeal,’ there had never been a lead woman in that way. There was Mary Tyler Moore and things like that, but the focus has changed. I’m not in charge of that, but I always enjoy the time that I have and then I move on. I never really dwell on anything like that. But I really would be shocked if that happened.”

Liu starred alongside Diaz and Drew Barrymore as the titular group of women working in a private detective agency. The films were a reboot of the 1976 crime drama television series of the same name, and were a hit when they released. In total, both Charlie’s Angels and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle earned more than $500 million at the worldwide box office.

A third installment in the series, Charlie’s Angels, was released in 2019, starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska. The film received less than stellar reviews and didn’t perform well at the box office.
