Luke Combs does '1, 2 Many' beer shots with Glen Powell and 'Twisters' stars at MetLife

Would you like a shot of beer with that twister?

Luke Combs sure would. The “Fast Car” country star brought the stars of the new movie “Twisters” on stage with him Friday, July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. Combs and the crew -- which included Twisters stars Glen Powell, Daisy-Edgar Jones, and Anthony Ramos -- drank beer shots during Combs' rendition of his hit “1, 2 Many.”

Combs and band later performed “Ain't No Love In Oklahoma” from the “Twisters” soundtrack as the stars stood offstage. “Twisters,” released on Friday, is shaping up to be a big summer hit, according to Variety.

As for Combs, he's a certified smash. His latest album, “Fathers & Sons,” is a Top 10 Billboard 100 hit and Combs' “Growin' Up and Gettin' Old” tour played to 55,000 at MetLife Stadium on Friday and 55,000 are expected for Night 2 on Saturday, July 20.

Combs is not your typical country music star. He's a not lean and he doesn't wear tight blue jeans. He also doesn't wear a cowboy hat, but he does wear a trucker style cap.

He wore a green New York Jets cap at MetLife, the home of the Jets, on Friday.

Combs is also not much for on-stage dramatics. He basically holds a microphone in his hand while walking from one end of the stage to the other as he sings.

The music holds his audience’s attention, and often their hearts. Combs' backway ballads have humble roots, and they touch on core emotions. “Love You Anyway,” a wheat-spun homily about a defenseless heart, had the whole stadium singing along. “Forever After All” brought the many couples in the crowd together, and Combs set up his performance of “Fast Car” with a story of his appreciation of the Tracy Chapman classic.

When Combs isn't tapping into feelings, he's rocking the house. The uptempo numbers are a cross between country and a big rock sound that sometimes veers close to heavy metal. Drummer Jake Sommers pounded out such a thundering 4/4 beat on “Beer Never Broke My Heart” that it seemed like audience members were riding a bucking bronco.

Combs added to the effect when he started whacking the cymbals on his way off the stage. His heart was into it.

Cody Jinks, Charles Wesley Godwin, Hailey Whitters, and Wilder Blue opened Friday's show. Jordan Davis, Mitchell Tenpenny, Drew Parker, and Colby Acuff will do the honors on Saturday.

There was lots of tailgating action on Friday before the show. There will be a Combs Bootleggers Tailgate Party 3 to 5:30 Saturday between Lots E and F, and DJ Big Country of Jersey City is setting up at in Lot J for pre-show festivities. Lots open 1:45 p.m. on Saturday.

A handful of tickets starting at $120 are available via Ticketmaster.
