Lynda Carter Annoyed by ‘Wonder Woman’ Controversy
A decision by the United Nations to name Wonder Woman as the organization’s ambassador for female empowerment is creating discord. According to The New York Times, more than 600 UN staff members have signed a petition asking departing Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to stop it.
Lynda Carter, who played the iconic hero on television in the 1970’s, was on CBS This Morning. She gave some epic eye rolls when the controversy was brought up and didn’t think much of the petition, some of which co-host Gayle King read out loud.
“‘A large-breasted white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring bodysuit with an American flag motif and knee-high boots is not an appropriate spokeswoman for gender equity at the United Nations,’” King read from the petition.
Carter was unmoved. “It is a superhero, number one,” she said. “And that gender…it has nothing to do with anything.Wonder Woman is an idea. This is not the American flag, it’s about fighting for freedom. “Clark Kent also had on a suit,” King said. “Well, yeah,” Carter agreed. “It’s ok to look female. It’s ok. I mean give me a break. I think they’re being silly…Nitpicky and get over yourself already.”
Tensions are especially high at the UN after seven qualified female candidates were passed over for secretary general. That a fictional character was named to the post only exacerbated their anger.
