Malia Obama Models One of Fall’s Hottest Prints in Vivienne Westwood at Deauville American Film Festival 2024 Opening Ceremony
Malia Obama embraced the tartan trend for fall at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Deauville American Film Festival in France on Friday.
The daughter of President Barack Obama walked the red carpet in an off-the-shoulder Vivienne Westwood ensemble featuring two colorful prints. Her look consisted of a draped corset and a high-low maxiskirt. The Harvard University alum accessorized with black leather knee-high boots Coperni.

Meredith Koop, stylist to Malia’s mother, former first lady Michelle Obama, dressed her for the occasion.
The 50th annual Deauville American Film Festival, which takes place from Sept. 6 to Sept. 15 in Deauville, France, will feature screenings of Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” and “Lee” starring Kate Winslet.
Malia has made a name for herself in the film industry since graduating from Harvard: she worked as a writer on the Amazon Prime Video series “Swarm” before releasing her debut short film, “The Heart,” which screened at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
Plaids, checks and tartans are trending for fall. WWD’s Alex Badia noted that several high-profile labels, including Chloé, Dior and Burberry, incorporated these heritage prints in their most recent collections.
Although Malia was absent at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in August, Michelle made a style statement in a navy crisscross Monse vest. Her look, which also came with matching trousers, originally debuted as part of the label’s resort 2025 collection. The former FLOTUS accessorized with a pair of Jimmy Choo’s Scarlett pumps and jewelry by David Yurman.
“Yes, Kamala and Tim are doing great now. We’re loving it, they’re packing arenas across the country, folks are energized. We are feeling good. But remember there are still so many people who are desperate for a different outcome,” Michelle said in her speech, referring to the ongoing presidential race. “So no matter how good we feel tonight or tomorrow or the next day this is going to be an uphill battle. This is up to us, all of us, to be the solution that we seek. It’s up to us to remember what Kamala’s mother told her: ‘Don’t just sit around and complain. Do something.'”
