Mandy Moore Says Rewatching “This Is Us” with Her Husband Now That They're Parents 'Is So Wildly Different' (Exclusive)
The actress played Pearson family matriarch Rebecca on the NBC series for all six seasons
Mandy Moore is reflecting on her time as Rebecca Pearson.
The actress, singer and soon-to-be mom of three says that rewatching This Is Us alongside her husband, Taylor Goldsmith, for her podcast That Was Us has given the pair new perspectives.
“It's like I'm going back to 2016 and I'm like, ‘Wow.’ Putting it back in that timeframe of what I was doing at that point in my life — my husband and I were still just newly dating — but the lens of watching the show now as a parent is so wildly different and watching it alongside [Taylor] as well,” she tells PEOPLE while promoting her new "Claim Your And" campaign with TJ Maxx.
“The conversations that we've had just in the last couple weeks and months since we started rewatching the show for the podcast? It's really, really interesting. We just weren't in this same frame of mind, we didn't have this life experience under our belt to even consider having some of these kinds of conversations," she adds.
This Is Us ran on NBC from 2016-2022, and the series dealt with themes of family, love and loss — and how all of those things are so inevitably intertwined.
Centered on the lives of siblings Kevin (Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and their parents Rebecca (Moore) and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia), the series also used multiple timelines, showing stories that took place in the present as well as flashbacks to the siblings’ childhood and flash-forwards to later years.
As for building their own family, Moore and Goldsmith got married in 2018, and they welcomed their first child, son August, in 2021. Baby No. 2, Oscar, was born the following year, and just last month, Moore announced that she and Goldsmith are expecting their third child (and first girl!)
Moore’s character on This Is Us famously had three children — two boys and a girl — who she referred to as “The Big Three.”
In the Instagram caption of her big announcement, Moore seized the opportunity to highlight the similarity.
"Sometimes life imitates art. The third in our own Big Three coming soon. Can’t wait for these boys to have a baby sister. ??????," she wrote.
Goldsmith, who is a musician, is “a fan of the show for sure,” Moore tells PEOPLE if her husband's longtime love for This Is Us, adding that being able to share the rewatching experience together is “really sweet.”
