Marc Anthony fires back at President Trump for calling Puerto Rico 'corrupt'

Cydney Henderson, USA TODAY

Marc Anthony is hitting back at President Donald Trump after the commander in chief bashed Puerto Rico as "one of the most corrupt places on earth."

"Their political system is broken and their politicians are either Incompetent or Corrupt," the president tweeted early Wednesday as the island braced for Tropical Storm Dorian. "Congress approved Billions of Dollars last time, more than anyplace else has ever gotten, and it is sent to Crooked Pols. No good!"

"And by the way," Trump added, "I’m the best thing that’s ever happened to Puerto Rico!"

Anthony, whose parents hail from Yauco, Puerto Rico, fired back on his Twitter account.

"Wow Mr. whatever you are," the Grammy award-winning singer wrote. "We all just read your DEMENTED tweet about my beloved Puerto Rico. Coming from a gruesome individual like YOU it makes perfect sense. Filled with corruption and incapable of managing a fully staffed HOUSE."

Anthony has frequently criticized Trump for his administration's response to Puerto Rico after the island was hit by back-to-back hurricanes in 2017. "Mr. President…Do something about our people in need in #PuertoRico. We are American citizens too," he tweeted in September 2017.

Puerto Rico was hit by yet another storm Wednesday. Dorian strengthened to a Category 1 hurricane as it blew past Puerto Rico and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, the National Hurricane Center said.

"FEMA and all others are ready, and will do a great job," Trump said beforehand, adding, "When they do, let them know it, and give them a big Thank You - Not like last time. That includes from the incompetent Mayor of San Juan!"
