Mariah Carey Confirms Mom Patricia and Sister Alison Died on the Same Day
Mariah Carey is in mourning after both her mother and sister died on the same day over the weekend.
On Monday, Aug. 26, the "All I Want for Christmas Is You" songstress confirmed the deaths of her mom, Patricia, and her sister, Alison.
"My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend," Carey told People. "Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day."
The pop star continued, "I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed."
As of writing, the causes of death for Carey's family members had not been publicly released.
"I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time," she concluded.
Carey's mother, Patricia, was an opera singer and vocal coach who trained at Juilliard before welcoming three children with her ex-husband, Alfred Roy Carey (he died in 2002). In addition to Mariah and Alison, they shared a son, Morgan.

As Carey detailed in her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, her relationships with her family members have been rocky and often estranged.
“Ours is a story of betrayal and beauty,” she said of her mother, per Billboard. “I’ve emancipated myself from bondage several times, but there is a cloud of sadness that I suspect will always hang over me, not simply because of my mother but because of our complicated journey together."
She added, "Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.”
Meanwhile, Alison sued Carey in 2020, claiming emotional distress over abuse allegations Carey made in her memoir.
