Following the death of her mother and sister, Mariah Carey has resumed rehearsals for her upcoming live performances. In late August, the musician revealed that her two family members died on the same day and asked for privacy while she processed the tragic events. “Back at work,” Carey wrote on Instagram. “It’s been a couple of rough weeks.”

The caption appeared beneath a video that featured a stripped back performance of “It’s Like That” from The Emancipation of Mimi. “We’ll see you soon China,” Carey says before strutting away from the piano. Over on X (formerly Twitter), she shared a separate video in which she performed “I Wish You Knew” from the same record. She dedicated the clip to her fans in China and Brazil, where she will host performances over the next two weeks.

The shows mark her first since she shared news of the recent double death. “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the singer said in a statement to Rolling Stone at the time. “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

A few weeks before, Carey concluded the second leg of her Celebration of Mimi residency in Las Vegas. The show will return in January 2025. In the meantime, Carey is scheduled to appear in Rio de Janeiro on Sept. 13 at Rock in Rio and in S?o Paulo on Sept. 20 at Allianz Parque. She’ll also headline two performances at Beijing Workers Stadium in China on Sept. 15 and 16.
