Mark Hamill kept the big 'Star Wars' secret from Carrie Fisher
Mark Hamill recently visited The Graham Norton Show and revealed that he had to keep the secret that Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker’s father from everyone, including his co-stars Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher.
Hamill told Norton that initially even he wasn’t told the secret. He said, “There was a wonderful substitute revelation in that scene. We filmed it and Vader said, ‘You don’t know the truth. Obi-Wan killed your father.’”
When he was told the reveal by the director of The Empire Strikes Back, Irvin Kershner, he was one of three people to know. Hamill had to keep the secret for a year and a half.
He couldn’t tell Carrie Fisher because she was known to tell secrets. According to Hamill, if he wanted information spread, he’d tell Fisher to keep it a secret.
Even Harrison Ford was kept in the dark. According to Hamill, Ford said to him during a screening, “Hey kid, you didn’t f***in’ tell me that.”
