Marsha Mason Steps Into Broadway’s ‘The Roommate’ For Covid-Struck Mia Farrow
Mia Farrow, who just opened with costar Patti LuPone in the hit comedy-drama The Roommate on Broadway, has tested positive for Covid, resulting in two canceled performances Saturday. At this afternoon matinee, actor Marsha Mason, an associate director of the play, stepped in for Farrow.
“I was called to step in by the producers while enjoying a lovely Sunday morning in Connecticut, and of course, came right to the City,” said Mason, who has played numerous roles on stage (The Prisoner of Second Avenue), film (The Goodbye Girl) and TV (The Middle). “These moments in the theater are equally exciting and terrifying, and the audience helped make it a fun ride. I was exhilarated to play opposite Patti and especially heartened to be able to pinch hit for my Connecticut dear friend and neighbor, Mia, who is quite marvelous in the role.”

The play, which opened this past Thursday night, is directed by Jack O’Brien. As associate director, Mason reportedly had been assisting with Farrow’s performance.
According to a statement put out by a production spokesperson following today’s matinee, both Mason and LuPone received standing ovations at the beginning and at the end of the performance. Prior to the performance, a spokesperson said Mason would perform at least partially with script in hand.
The play follows two unlikely roommates – LuPone plays a hipster Bronx woman fleeing a multitude of secrets, while Farrow’s character is a straight-as-an-arrow midwestern divorcee enticed by her new roommate’s edgy criminal lifestyle.
The Roommate is produced by Chris Harper, Nelle Nugent and Kenneth Teaton.
The play is set to resume performances on Tuesday evening. No word yet on that night’s casting.
Over the summer, New York City has been among the many locations nationwide experiencing a surge in Covid cases.
