Marshawn Lynch Teases Plan To Go “Beast Mode” In Run For Mayor Of Oakland
Marshawn Lynch is reportedly considering running for Mayor of his hometown of Oakland, Ca., a move that would find the NFL legend on the offensive in his potential campaign for office.
During a recent episode of his Politickin’ podcast with California Governor Gavin Newsome and Lynch’s agent, Doug Hendrickson, the former gridiron star spoke on the chance he would make a mayoral bid in an upcoming election.
“It might be a possibility,” Lynch said of a dive into the political realm, leading Newsome and Hendrickson to jokingly urge Lynch to go “Beast Mode,” a nod to his nickname, as a candidate.
Lynch says he began mulling over whether he would run for office during his ESPN College GameDay visit to the campus of his alma mater, University of California, Berkeley, earlier this month.
During the pod, the 38-year-old jokingly likened his potential conduct as mayor to later actor and comedian Bernie Mac’s role as Mitch Gilliam, who became Vice President of the United States in the 2003 film Head of State.
“Do you remember when Bernie Mac was walking through, when he was slapping the sh*t out of everybody?” Lynch asked. “That’s how I would be coming through there… slapping the sh*t out of everybody, like, ‘Get your sh*t together.’”
Marshawn Lynch began his NFL career when he was drafted 12th overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 2007 NFL Draft. He played for the Bills from 2007 to 2010, showcasing his powerful running style and earning a reputation as a tough, hard-nosed back.
In 2010, Lynch was traded to the Seattle Seahawks, where he would truly make his mark in the league. His time in Seattle from 2010 to 2015 transformed him into one of the premier running backs in NFL history, earning him the nickname “Beast Mode” due to his explosive running ability and penchant for breaking tackles.
During his tenure with the Seahawks, Lynch helped lead the team to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. Seattle won Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014 against the Denver Broncos, a game in which Lynch rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown.
However, the Seahawks fell short in Super Bowl XLIX in 2015 against the New England Patriots, in a game famously remembered for a controversial goal-line interception.
After the 2015 season, Lynch announced his retirement from professional football. He briefly returned to the NFL in 2019, signing with the Seahawks during the playoffs, but did not play a full season. Lynch officially retired for a second time after the 2019 season, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most dynamic and memorable running backs in NFL history.
Throughout his career, he amassed over 10,000 rushing yards and 85 rushing touchdowns, solidifying his place among the all-time greats.
