‘Martin’ Prequel Spin-Off Series Is On The Way, Backed By Martin Lawrence Himself
One of the most beloved sitcoms of all time is revealing a new chapter. Martin is set to receive an official prequel series, backed by Martin Lawrence himself.
Deadline reports the forthcoming drama is in the works courtesy of Lawrence’s production company, RunTelDat, in collaboration with Marvin Peart‘s WonderHill Studios. Titled Young Martin, the hourlong series will tell the “origin story centering on Martin Payne, a charismatic teenager navigating the complexities of transitioning from youth to adulthood,” per the outlet.
Young Martin is executive produced by Lawrence, Rae Proctor, Robert Lawrence, and Stacy Lyles from RunTelDat, with Bob Yari, David McPherson, Rosa Peart, and Greg Martin for WonderHill Studios. The show is set in modern-day Detroit, as a teenage Martin navigates scenarios involving family, friends, and his ambitious.
The iconic sitcom aired for five seasons on Fox from Aug. 27, 1992, to May 1, 1997. It took home the win at the 1993 People’s Choice Awards for Favorite TV New Comedy Series, and locked in three victories at the NAACP Image Awards between 1994 and 1995.
Most recently, Martin lovers were treated with a cast reunion at the 2024 Emmy Awards. On Jan. 15, Lawrence, Tisha Campbell, Tichina Arnold, and Carl Anthony Payne II gathered on stage at the ceremony, while the late Thomas Mikal Ford was honored with a photo included in the set.
Martin Lawrence has been busy all of 2024. The year kicked off with him and co-star Will Smith hitting the ground running for the Bad Boys: Ride Or Die press tour. The movie premiered on June 7 and became the eighth-highest grossing film of 2024, raking in $179.1 million in the United States and Canada, and $183.7 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $362.7 million.
