Martin Short Breaks His Silence About the Persistent Meryl Streep Dating Rumors

One of the hottest Hollywood dating rumors has nothing to do with a Gen Z or Millennial celebrity romance — it’s about two entertainment industry legends. After the Golden Globes, the gossip went into overdrive about Meryl Streep and Martin Short possibly enjoying each other’s company off-camera. Now, Short is breaking his silence on the alleged affair.

The 73-year-old comedian revealed that he isn’t entertaining the relationship idea with Streep whatsoever on Sunday’s podcast episode of Club Random with Bill Maher. The host joked that Short and Streep were a “power couple,” but the former Saturday Night Live star seemed a bit sensitive about the dating chatter. “We’re not a couple, we are just very close friends,” he told Maher.

“Well, you should because there’s nothing more powerful in Hollywood than a power couple,” Maher jokingly responded. “It worked for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, it worked for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.” We certainly don’t want any Short and Streep drama, but they would make a cute couple if they ever wanted to date.

Short’s rep was quick to shoot down the story after social media went nuts over the duo possibly dating. They told People that Streep and Short “are just very good friends, nothing more.” Fans just thought they looked great together, especially after knowing Streep had quietly separated from her husband, Don Gummer, six years ago — a revelation that came to light in 2023.

But Short seems to be sweetly dedicated to his late wife, Nancy Dolman, who died from ovarian cancer in 2010. “Our marriage was a triumph, so it’s tough,” he told AARP: The Magazine five years ago. “She died in 2010, but I still communicate with her all the time. It’s, ‘Hey Nan,’ you know? How would she react to this decision or that, especially regarding our three kids.”

It’s probably time for fans to back off the idea of a Short-Streep relationship because the comedian doesn’t want to be a part of Hollywood gossip.
