They’re assembling another team.
On Monday, Marvel finally released the first trailer for “Thunderbolts*,” the studio’s forthcoming adventure about the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s rogues’ gallery. (Marvel has been teasing the project since San Diego Comic-Con in July.)

Directed by Emmy Award winner Jake Schreier (“Beef”) with a script previously attributed to Eric Pearson (“Black Widow,” “Thor: Ragnarok”), Joanna Calo (“The Bear”), and Lee Sung Jin (“Beef”) – although how the final credits will shake out is unclear – “Thunderbolts*” brings together several Marvel antagonists, including Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). The trailer, using The Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind” and with vibes ripped out of “The Suicide Squad,” teases some nefarious conspiracy and many baddie-on-baddie fight scenes. Other cast members playing new characters in the Marvel narrative include Geraldine Viswanathan (who replaced Ayo Edebiri) and Lewis Pullman (who plays someone named “Bob,” but not the same Bob as the one Pullman embodied in “Top Gun: Maverick”; Emmy winner Steven Yeun was originally attached to the Pullman part).
Marvel first unveiled “Thunderbolts*” to its fanbase at Comic-Con this past July. Back then, the cast went out of its way to praise Pugh, who has the apparent lead role in the project. “They’re all wonderful, but I do have a favorite, and her name is Florence Pugh,” Harbour, who appeared with Pugh in “Black Widow,” said at the time. “She is just electric to work with. There’s complexity in their relationship this time around, and we got to go to all these different levels. He’s a terrible narcissist who has a hard time showing up for other people, and she is very dedicated to killing people. It’s not a great start to a relationship.”
Speaking to Variety for a recent interview Stan compared the film to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” specifically about how his character fits into the narrative. Stan said Bucky is “a guy coming into this group that was chaotic and degenerate, and somehow finding a way to unite them.”
“Thunderbolts*” – and, yes, the asterisk is part of the title – is out in theaters on May 2, 2025.
