Mary-Kate Olsen and Sean Avery Are Reportedly ‘Just Friends’ Despite Dating Rumors

Mary-Kate Olsen and former professional hockey player Sean Avery sparked dating rumors over Memorial Day weekend when they were photographed together in the Hamptons. But a source quickly clarified their real relationship status to Us Weekly on Tuesday.
The insider acknowledged that while Olsen and Avery did have a romantic past, it’s not their present. They explained, “Mary-Kate and Sean have been friends since 2006, they had a fling for a while in 2007 and have remained friends. They see each other every summer in The Hamptons, but they’re just friends.”
That source weighed in on whether there’s any chance Olsen and Avery could date again, saying, “They’re both single right now, so there’s a possibility they could hook up again, but they seem like platonic friends when they’re together, as they have for a while.”
In the new photos Daily Mail ran of Olsen and Avery, the pair visited the Olsen twins’ newest The Row storefront in Amagansett, New York. The outlet reported they also went to see their mutual friend Andy Cohen later that day.
Olsen and Avery’s last public outing was in May 2011, when they sat next to each other at a dinner celebrating 25 years of Style Wars.
Olsen has been publicly single since her 2020 divorce from French banker Olivier Sarkozy. The couple had gotten married in November 2015.
Olsen has managed to keep her love life almost completely private since her marriage ended. A source did tell Entertainment Tonight in October 2020 that she had quietly begun dating again. “She’s single and having fun,” the source said. “She’s not seriously with anyone, but she's dating.”
