‘The Masked Singer’: John Elway among Top 21 most famous celebrities of all time

Now in its 12th season, Fox’s wild and wacky reality TV show “The Masked Singer” has seen over 180 contestants “take it off” on the big stage. While some of the unmaskings set the water cooler on fire with how well-known the person turned out to be, others — let’s be honest — had much of the audience whispering, “Who is that?” In our gallery above, we rank “The Masked Singer’s” most famous celebrities of all time. If you didn’t know any of these Top 21 personalities before the show aired, it’s safe to say you’ve been living under a rock your whole life.

“The Masked Singer” airs Wednesday nights on Fox. Host Nick Cannon emcees the show as famous faces hide inside outrageous costumes and perform for judges Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, Nicole Scherzinger and later Rita Ora. John Elway is the latest notable figure to join our ever-growing gallery. The Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee and Super Bowl legend was revealed in the Season 12 premiere as the little-known creature known as Leaf Sheep (it’s an undersea slug — Google it). The judges referred to Elway as the G.O.A.T., which he clearly appreciated, even though a couple of them thought he was Tom Brady or Troy Aikman.

Last year, Season 11 was bookended (literally) by two of the most famous celebs of all time: Kevin Hart as Book and Vanessa Hudgens as Goldfish. Hart opened the season, but he ripped off his own mask before the judges could even vote. The fun cameo ended when the movie star and comedian delivered an ear-piercing cover of “So Sick” by Ne-Yo. After winning the Season 11 contest, Hudgens proudly proclaimed, “It’s honestly the most incredible thing ever!” The popular actress impressed the panelists each and every week with her delicate voice, so it was hardly a surprise when she eventually wrapped her fins around the Golden Mask.
