Gold Derby’s official guess for Sherlock Hound is … Bronson Arroyo! Don’t believe us? Let’s examine all of the clues, one by one:

Masked Ambassador Clues

Sherlock Hound’s ambassador is Barry Zito, aka Rhino from Season 3, who states, “You know what they say, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but I can tell you first-hand my friend, Sherlock Hound, begs to differ … [His career is] something huge! And we’ve even had some of the best jam sessions ever.” Barry and Bronson are both Major League Baseball pitchers who play music on the side. Bronson’s debut album is called “Covering the Bases” and features cover songs from rock bands like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Incubus.

Audio Clues

First week: Here is what Sherlock Hound has to say about himself: “My whole family was into music. My grandma taught it, and my old man played the keys. But I wanted to be outside running wild, not cooped up playing a cello. When I heard rock and roll, it unleashed a passion inside — some might say a mystery I had to solve. From there, I was tracking that scent through campfires, dive bars, and tour buses. I was onto something, something big.” In a 2023 interview with Icon vs. Icon, Bronson revealed that his parents were always playing music in the house, while he was outside playing baseball.

Second week: Sherlock Hound says he broke an almost-century long-curse, and Bronson certainly did that when he helped lead the Boston Red Sox to the World Series Championship in 2004, their first since 1918.

Visual Clues

First week: On-screen hints during Sherlock Hound’s video package include the following: a diamond record, a red guitar, and an eye patch. The record is a direct reference to Bronson’s time playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks (2014), the color of the guitar reminds us his tenures on the Boston Red Sox (2003-05) and the Cincinnati Reds (2006-13), and the eye patch alludes to when he pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates (2000-02).

Second week: We saw sugar cubes and sweet tea, which reference Bronson’s Southern roots in Florida. A stuffed bull in one clue package may be a shout-out to one of his favorite flicks, “Bull Durham,” which he discussed on “The Dan Patrick Show.” There was also a red slide, and baseball players are known to slide into base to avoid being tagged out.

In-Person Clues

First week: Following his performance of “Under the Bridge,” the Men in Black bring out a T-shirt that says “#1 HIT.” Sherlock Hound responds, “I know what it’s like to be number one in the world.” Indeed, he does — Bronson won the 2004 World Series with the Boston Red Sox.

Second week: After his performance of “Used to Be Young,” the Men in Black reveal a blond wig, to which Sherlock Hound says, “Hannah Montana’s not the only one with gorgeous, long hair.” Bronson was known for his long locks during his days as a professional athlete. He also tells Jenny, “Your husband loves me.” Donnie Wahlberg is a Boston native and Red Sox fan.

The ultimate Golden Mask recipient for “The Masked Singer” Season 12 will join the following list of winners: T-Pain as Monster (Season 1), Wayne Brady as Fox (Season 2), Kandi Burruss as Night Angel (Season 3), LeAnn Rimes as Sun (Season 4), Nick Lachey as Piglet (Season 5), Jewel as Queen of Hearts (Season 6), Teyana Taylor as Firefly (Season 7), Amber Riley as Harp (Season 8), Bishop Briggs as Medusa (Season 9), Ne-Yo as Cow (Season 10), and Vanessa Hudgens as Goldfish (Season 11).
