‘The Masked Singer’ spoilers: Who is Showbird?
Were you as impressed as we were when Showbird raised her voice in song for the first time on “The Masked Singer”? She wowed us with her flawless cover of the Mary J. Blige classic “Just Fine” on the September 25 episode. We’ve rewatched that performance by Showbird and her clues package. Forget those guesses by the judges that Showbird is Jennifer Hudson, Taraji P. Henson or Kerry Washington.We are sure we know Showbird’s true identity. We are convinced that Showbird is Yvette Nicole Brown, the veteran scene stealer from the long-running comedy series “Community.” Don’t believe us? Besides the fact that the Showbird sounds just like her, consider how so many of the clues fit in with the life of Yvette Nicole Brown.

Showbird’s ambassador is Joel McHale, a frequent guest judge on “The Masked Singer.” He describes Showbird as “a good friend” – McHale and Brown co-starred on “Community” (as did “TMS” judge Ken Jeong). Showbird traded quips with McHale, noting that, unlike him, she has appeared in some of the biggest blockbuster movies ever. Brown has racked up appearances in such hits as “Avengers: Endgame” and “Inside Out 2.” And that bucket of popcorn he is carrying is a throwback to one of Brown’s first regular gigs on TV as Helen DuBois, the movie theater manager on the Nickelodeon hit “Drake & Josh.”
Showbird readily admits to being a total nerd and makes specific mention of the building blocks Lego. Brown has given voice to several characters in animated versions of this classic toy including Amanda Waller and Lieutenant Valeria.
Among the visual clues is a textbook titled “Advanced Singing 401” (another tie-in to “Community,” which was set in a junior college), and a golden gavel (we read that as a reference to Brown’s Emmy-nominated performance as Showbird then banged a gold judge’s gavel, which is most likely a reference to Yvette’s Emmy-nominated role as Judge Anita Harper on “A Black Lady Sketch Show.”)
