‘Matlock’ gets season 2 renewal after only 2 episodes
The verdict is in on the CBS reboot of “Matlock.” The Tiffany network renewed the legal drama for a second season after only two episodes aired.
In making the announcement, CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said, “This reconceived ‘Matlock’ was devised by Jennie Snyder Urman with a brilliant surprise plot twist, and we knew we had something very special the moment we saw the first episode brought to life by the incredibly talented Kathy Bates. The audience reception and critical acclaim for it has been overwhelming. We can’t wait to get started on a second season.”

Bates plays a society matron, Madeline Kingston, who masquerades as Madeline “Matty” Matlock to wangle a job at the law firm that she holds responsible for her daughter’s death from opioid addiction. This dual role is a meaty one for the Oscar winner and seems certain to bring her plenty more awards hardware.
We are predicting that Bates will reap bids for Best Drama Actress at both the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, where she’ll face off against reigning Emmy champ Anna Sawai (“Shogun”). And with Sawai’s show not coming back in time for next year’s Emmys, Bates could well be the frontrunner in that race. She already has a pair of Emmys for her guest spot on “Two and a Half Men” (2012) and her scene-stealing supporting turn on “American Horror Story: Coven” (2014).
