Matt Damon Might Be Taking Jennifer Lopez's Side in Ben Affleck Divorce
Matt Damon might be finding himself squarely in the middle of Ben Affleck’s divorce from Jennifer Lopez. Of course, he’s loyal to his longtime Boston bestie, but he isn’t exactly aligning with his pal’s less-than-kind behavior, according to insiders.
“It’s been very difficult for Matt to sit by and condone or even forgive Ben’s behavior, which he finds cruel and totally unwarranted,” a source told In Touch Weekly. “He’s not trying to butt in for the sake of it and can see very well that life with J. Lo was likely a challenge, but not to a point where she deserved to be humiliated and degraded.” Fans witnessed Lopez’s close relationship with Damon when they were spotted talking at the Unstoppable after party on Sunday, Sept. 8 at the Toronto Film Festival.

The Daily Mail published snapshots of the friends engaged in a sometimes serious, but warm conversation. Damon grasped her hand in comfort at one point while Lopez was engaged in a more emotional part of their discussion. “Matt’s big on manners. His wife, Luciana [Barroso], also agrees that Ben’s handled this situation with a serious lack of empathy or class,” the In Touch Weekly insider added. “And they’ve not been shy letting him know that.”
There were rumors that Damon was not a fan of Affleck’s marriage to Lopez, especially after he was absent from the couple’s Georgia wedding in August 2022. “Matt’s had serious reservations about Bennifer 2.0 since the beginning. He’s tried to be publicly supportive for Ben’s sake, but the fact is he hates the way J.Lo treats his buddy and can no longer hold his tongue,” a source told OK! Magazine in December 2023. Maybe the real truth was that The Bourne Identity star disliked the way Affleck treated Lopez? The evidence appears to be pointing more in that direction now that the divorce papers have been filed.
Dam reportedly feels “pretty bad” for his buddy’s estranged wife and he’s offering his support. “He’s been trying to reason with Ben to be a little bit more compassionate to the fact that she’s humiliated right now,” the In Touch Weekly insider said. That doesn’t mean that Damon is abandoning his lifelong BFF, he just wants Affleck to see that there’s a kinder road to be taken in this divorce.
