Matthew McConaughey is back on the bongos, this time with the Dixie Chicks
Matthew McConaughey is not only unapologetic about the infamous “naked bongo-playing” incident that landed him in jail nearly 20 years ago — he’s still downright celebrating it. The actor took the opportunity to show off his skills during a set played by fellow Texans the Dixie Chicks for an Austin benefit Thursday night (April 12).
The country trio had just finished up a set of favorites — including their hits “Ready to Run,” “Cowboy Take Me Away,” and “Not Ready to Make Nice” — for the annual Mack, Jack & McConaughey fundraiser at ACL Live, when stagehands rolled out bongos for the encore.
Make no mistake: McConaughey was (and remained) fully clothed, but there was no doubt those bongos were for him. He got up on stage and ripped it up with the Chicks on a cover of Ben Harper’s “Better Way.”

By the way, just to clear things up: McConaughey’s 1999 arrest wasn’t due to his penchant for nudity or his bongo skills. He got himself in trouble for possession of marijuana, and allegedly refusing to comply when a cop asked him to put his pants on. (The charges were eventually dropped.)
Mack, Jack & McConaughey is the joint fundraising effort of McConaughey, country music artist Jack Ingram, and ESPN analyst and Texas coaching legend Mack Brown. Since its launch in 2013, the nonprofit has raised nearly $7.5 million for organizations dedicated to children’s education, health, and wellness.
