Matthew McConaughey Open to Returning to ‘True Detective’: ‘I Miss Rust Cohle’
On the Rich Eisen Show, Matthew McConaughey gave True Detective viewers hope that he might be returning to the series.
McConaughey played fan favorite Rust Cohle on Season 1, and said that he’s spoken to creator Nic Pizzolatto about revisiting the character. He said, “I miss Rust Cohle. I miss watching him on Sunday nights, I miss watching True Detective on Sunday nights. I’ve talked to Nic about it, it would have to be the right context, the right way.”
One of Rust Cohle’s more eccentric qualities — and something that divided viewers — is his soft spot for rambling monologues. Most of these soliloquies occur when Cohle is being interrogated, and McConaughey gave some exhausting details behind the filming process: “We shot [the interrogation room] in a day; 28 pages. I remember that day we were in there for about 18 hours and we had shot about 24 pages, and they were like ‘Everybody, we are wiped, can we go home?’ and I was like, ‘No we’re not going home, I’m finishing this, I’m in the belly of the beast.’”
Season 1 of True Detective ended with Cohle prematurely leaving the hospital after sustaining some serious injuries. So if McConaughey does return, it’s possible he could pick right back up where he left. Or, they could dig into Cohle’s younger years, a potential goldmine of new monologues.
Despite McConaughey’s interest, the future of True Detective is currently undecided. A third season has not yet been announced, and viewers and critics alike found its second season disappointing.
