We May Finally Know Who Taylor Swift & Selena Gomez Were Whispering About at the Golden Globes
What does Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez’s gossipy moment at the Golden Globes have to do with Meryl Streep and Martin Short? Well, maybe everything now that Streep and Short have reportedly soft-launched their romance at the Season 4 red-carpet premiere of Only Murders in the Building on Thursday, Aug. 22.
The award-winning actors looked cozy on the red carpet and were even spotted holding hands by Deadline at the after-party. This romance comes months after Short’s rep told People that Streep and the 74-year-old actor were “just very good friends, nothing more.” The rumors began at the Golden Globes in January because the dynamic duo looked very close at the awards show — and that’s where Swift and Gomez entered the chat.

The women were caught whispering by the TV cameras and many fans assumed that Gomez was in some sort of beef with Kylie Jenner over her boyfriend, Timothée Chalamet. The allegation was that Gomez had asked Chalamet for a selfie, but Jenner refused to let him pose with the Hulu star. Gomez tried to clear up the confusion by dropping into the E! News Instagram comments after they shared the viral moment. “Noooooo I told Taylor about two of my friends who hooked up. Not that that’s anyone business,” Gomez chimed in.
Who could the “Who Says” singer be talking about? Well, let’s bring Short and Streep back into the conversation. One user on X thinks that Gomez was talking about her very famous co-stars. The account user wrote, along with an attachment of Gomez’s comments and the video of Streep and Short holding hands, “The fact that that comment was, most likely, about them is everything ??.” It only took eight months, but the mystery might have been solved!
The alleged relationship comes on the heels of Streep’s October 2023 announcement that she separated from her husband, Don Gummer, six years earlier. Their split was kept under the radar, and that’s exactly how Streep probably wants to maintain her romance with Short — out of the public eye. The comedian lost his wife, Nancy Dolman, in 2010 to ovarian cancer and has been single since his Streep romance. While the two talented actors have been coy about their blossoming love, Short had the sweetest thing to say about his sweetheart.
“She’s fabulous,” he told People in May. “There’s no one who doesn’t adore her.” And it’s lovely to see that Swift and Gomez respected Short and Streep’s wishes for privacy and kept their secret for months.
