Maya Rudolph on what it was like meeting Kamala Harris, returning to play her on 'SNL' this season: 'She has such a great sense of humor about herself'
Maya Rudolph’s portrayal of California Sen. Kamala Harris on Saturday Night Live has been so memorable that, very fittingly, GIFs of the comedian as the politician flooded social media the day Harris was announced as Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s running mate.
Many were meant to celebrate Harris, the first African-American, first Asian-American, and only third woman vice presidential running mate on a major party ticket. Others specifically celebrated the fact that with Harris a prominent player in the 2020 election, it would be practically inevitable that Rudolph would be returning to play her.
The actress, who was a cast member on SNL from 2000 to 2007 and won an Emmy for a guest appearance as Harris earlier this month, all but confirmed that would be the case in a new interview with Yahoo Entertainment.
“I believe so,” said Rudolph, asked if we’d see her return to SNL (premiering Saturday) in the lead-up to the election while promoting her upcoming comedy Hubie Halloween. “And it better be after.”
Unlike, say, President Donald Trump’s continued aggravation with Alec Baldwin’s impression of him, Rudolph says Harris has positively responded to her take on the senator.
“She has a such a great sense of humor, and such a great sense of humor about herself,” Rudolph says.
The actress finally met the vice presidential candidate during a recent fundraiser for the Biden-Harris campaign.
“It was pretty exciting, I gotta say. She’s so cool, she’s so lovely, and was so warm… It’s never not scary meeting someone who do an impression of, but hopefully it’s with love and with respect.
“It’s such an honor now, being associated with such a tremendous person. So it was cool to meet her and to talk to her. I like her so much, so it was very fun. She’s amazing.”
Hubie Halloween premieres on Netflix Oct. 7.
