Maya Rudolph Set To Reprise Kamala Harris Role On ‘Saturday Night Live’ This Fall
Maya Rudolph is stepping back on the campaign trail as she returns to her Kamala Harris character this fall on Saturday Night Live.
Deadline reports that the Emmy-winning actress will give the people what they want as she dons Harris’ signature navy blue pantsuit yet again—just in time for the conclusion of the 2024 Presidential campaign, with Harris taking on former President Donald Trump.
As a result, Rudolph’s Apple TV+ show, Loot, has been put on a temporary pause. The actress stars in the series and executive produces, as well, so it makes sense that the project would need to be halted for “scheduling reasons,” per the outlet.
Additionally, Apple TV+’s Loot is produced by NBC sibling Universal Television— the same company that produces Saturday Night Live. Loot was initially set to begin shooting for Season 3 on Aug 26. The outlet reports that the hit show will now resume shooting January 2025.
Rudolph previously took on the role of Kamala Harris in a 2019 sketch that followed her partaking in a Democratic debate. The “Funt” — explained on the variety sketch show as the “fun aunt” — was introduced in the cold open of the Eddie Murphy-hosted episode.
The sketch was critically acclaimed, leading to the entertainer snagging an Emmy Award for Guest Actress In a Comedy Series. Since then, Rudolph has returned to play the Oakland-born politician on numerous occasions, including in 2021, which led to another Emmy win. Saturday Night Live is set to premiere its 50th season on air September 28—over a month before the 2024 Presidential election in November.
Rudolph is up for four Emmy Awards, including Lead Actress In a Comedy Series for her role as Molly Novak in Loot. The Florida native has also been nominated for an Emmy for Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her hosting duty on Saturday Night Live’s most recent season.
