Meet a Couple of Great Outdoorsmen in Clip from 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' (Exclusive)
Calling all lovers of What We Do in the Shadows. Taika Waititi, the Kiwi writer-director behind last year’s blissfully funny vampire mockumentary (which we ranked as the 12th best movie of the year, but admittedly could have gone higher), returns with another must-see indie comedy, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, before the filmmaker moves into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with next year’s Thor: Ragnarok.
Wilderpeople follows Ricky Baker, a hip-hop-loving preteen who bounces from one foster home and juvie center to the next until he’s taken in by an aging couple (Sam Neill and Rima Te Wiata) in the Middle of Nowhere, New Zealand. For reasons we won’t spoil here, Ricky and Neill’s curmudgeonly Hector soon end up on the lam together in “the bush.”
You can get a taste for their misadventures together in the exclusive clip above, which shows Ricky’s horribly failed attempt at hunting, and Hector’s subsequent penchant for glaring at him like he’s an idiot.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople, which premiered to great reviews at the Sundance Film Festival in January, opens June 24. Watch the trailer:
