Megan Thee Stallion set the tone for the 2024 BET Awards as she kicked off the show on Sunday with an electrifying performance, emerging from a giant egg in a shiny blue-and-green bodysuit and high-heeled boots.

Backed by a bevy of dancers, she delivered a medley of her hits to launch the ceremony. It included “Hiss,” “Boa,” and “Where Them Girls At.” At the end of her energetic, twerk-heavy set, she cocked her head confidently, knowing she just fired-up the audience to get the night started.

The rapper is also nominated for four awards at the show including Best Female Hip-Hop Artist as well as Best Collaboration and Video of the Year for “Bongos” with Cardi B. Megan last performed at the BET Awards in 2021, when she hit the stage with “Thot Shit” from her mixtape Something for Thee Hotties.

On Friday, the rapper released her self-titled third studio album, Megan, featuring the previously released snake trilogy singles “Hiss,” “Boa,” and “Cobra.”

“Megan Thee Stallion’s third studio album and sixth body of work, Megan, is ripe for a Hot Girl Summer of feeling yourself (literally — more on that in a second), brushing off haters, and living your best life,” Rolling Stone wrote in a breakdown of the album. “After the more experimental debut of Good News and the grave tone of its followup, Traumazine, she leans deeper into her Southern identity, sexuality, and status as one of rap’s hottest commodities.”

The record marks Megan’s first album release as an independent artist following her departure from 1501 Certified and 300 Entertainment. The project and performance arrive in the midst of the Hot Girl Summer tour, the rapper’s first headlining run makes stops at arenas throughout North American and Europe.

“This is music I would like if I wasn’t Megan Thee Stallion,” the artist recently told L’Officiel. “I don’t want to say I’m tapping into other genres. I’m just tapping into other sounds. But it’s still very much Megan Thee Stallion. It won’t feel like I went so left. It’ll feel true to me. You’ll almost be like, ‘I wouldn’t have thought she would’ve rapped over that, but this sounds great.’”
