Meghan McCain says President Trump's obsession with her late father makes it hard to grieve
Meghan McCain lashed out at President Trump on Thursday’s episode of The View, saying his fixation on her late father and his legacy makes it difficult for her to grieve.
“It’s impossible to go through the grief process when my father, who’s been dead 10 months, is constantly in the news cycle, because the president is so obsessed with the fact that he’s never going to be great man like he was,” she said.
Her comments come on the heels of reports that the White House requested the Navy hide a destroyer named, in part, after Senator John McCain so that the president wouldn’t see it during his trip to Japan. White House officials confirmed to the New York Times that the request was made, but said that the president had no knowledge of it.
Trump echoed the claim on Twitter, writing:
I was not informed about anything having to do with the Navy Ship USS John S. McCain during my recent visit to Japan. Nevertheless, @FLOTUS and I loved being with our great Military Men and Women - what a spectacular job they do!

“The president’s actions have consequences,” McCain said. ?”?And when you repeatedly are attacking my father and war heroes, it creates a culture in the military where people are clearly fearful to show my father’s name in one way or another. That, I think, is what I think has started this chain of events.?”?
Instead, McCain asked people “to have a little more compassion.”
“This is very hard. I try to put on a game face every day and I try to be as stoic as possible but grief is tricky and I’m still sad, and I’m sorry if 9 months in isn’t enough for people for me to move on.”
The View co-host added that when the president consistently harps on her father, “it makes it this much more complicated.”
Many viewers on Twitter heard McCain’s plea loud and clear, and spoke out in support of the co-host:
There is NO timetable on grief @MeghanMcCain. My Mom died 42 years ago and I still miss her every day. You feel free to speak about and grieve publicly @TheView for your late father Senator John McCain. You’re human, too...

I am appalled at some of the comments to @MeghanMcCain. These people have no soul or conscience. My heart goes out to the McCain family. I apologize to them on behalf of all the idiots who shame her for grieving!!!!

Meghan, no one can put a time limit on grief, so no worries. You are correct that the reason 45 continuously speaks bout your dad is because he will NEVER be a great man. It's also part of the reason he speaks the way he does about Joe Biden. SHAME ON HIM!

Others disagreed with her take that it’s the president’s fault Senator McCain’s name is constantly in the news:
It's The View's fault for talking about McCain over and over. Blame the show.

Maybe Meghan needs to take a break from the spotlight. She needs to take at the very least 1 year off. I totally understand grief but most people don’t have to deal with it publicly on television everyday.
