Meghan McCain slams headline claiming she drank 'through her father's cancer,' Whoopi Goldberg comes to her defense
Meghan McCain is firing back at insinuations that she used alcohol to cope with the death of her father, Sen. John McCain. One day after her emotional return to The View, McCain called out a website for taking her words out of context as she discussed the subject of shaming during Tuesday’s episode.
“Shaming culture is something I’m 100 percent against,” she began, before citing a personal example. “I had a rough day coming back to the show yesterday. It’s just been hard; everybody knows that. I talked about when I first found out my dad had terminal cancer with a lifespan of 12 to 14 months. I said that I got wasted, which I did that night.”
On Monday’s show, McCain went around the table and thanked her View co-hosts for the support she received over the last year. That included an anecdote about how Abby Huntsman watched her get wasted the day of her father’s diagnosis. Huntsman “was heavily pregnant, and she watched me down Jack Daniels after Jack Daniels, and then I threw up, and her sister held my hair back,” McCain said lightheartedly.
She continued, “And there was a headline last night that said ‘The View’s Meghan McCain tearfully opens up about drinking through her dad’s cancer.’ First of all, screw you, I did not drink through my father’s cancer.”
She didn’t name the outlet, but she was referring to an article posted on Raw Story. Whoopi Goldberg jumped in to defend her friend and co-host.
“Let me put it this way, you know, until you lose someone, until someone goes, shut up!” Goldberg exclaimed. “Because unless you’ve been there — and I was high through my brother’s death, and I was high through my mother’s death — and you know why? Because sometimes it’s hard to put one foot in front of the other, and until you’ve been there, shut up!”
“Are you going to shame Whoopi and I for dealing with death the way that we dealt with it?” McCain added. “And by the way … I woke up at 5 o’clock in the morning and took my dad to radiation and chemo treatments. How dare you say that I’m somehow an alcoholic or imply that? And by the way, even if I was, I’d be talking about it on the talk show that I co-host.”
And for the record, McCain declared: “I do not have any substance-abuse problems.”
