Melania Trump’s memoir, aptly titled Melania, will be out in less than two weeks and she’s reportedly not missing an opportunity to promote the Oct. 8 book. While she’s absent from Donald Trump’s campaign trail, the PR-savvy former first lady knows that the news cycle is finicky — she’s not missing an opportunity to promote her book while the election is happening.

Melania has been teasing her fans and the media with seductive topics that often generate headlines on her X account — from defending her nude modeling days to her controversial White House rose garden renovation. A lot of the messaging is done in stark black-and-white font which only adds to the mystery behind Melania and what she’s really like in her private life. Her former BFF and adviser Stephanie Winston Wolkoff told the Associated Press that Melania knows exactly what she’s doing.

“She is capitalizing on the time she has left before the election. Her (market) value is gone if she is no longer a prospective first lady,” Wolkoff explained. “If Harris wins, I believe people will want to move on.” There is bound to be interest though because Melania was one of the most “unknowable” first ladies to have ever entered the White House, according to Kate Andersen Brower, author of First Women: The Grace and Power of America’s Modern First Ladies.

“I always felt that she didn’t want to be the first lady, and she was unapologetic about it,” Brower told SheKnows in August 2023. “She wasn’t interested in doing what we expected of her.” The author claimed that Melania “lowered the bar” for what a first lady needs to accomplish during her husband’s administration — and don’t get Brower started on her campaign efforts. “We don’t expect to see or hear from her. If we do, it’s surprising.”

While Melania is taking advantage of her husband’s time at the top of the news cycle (because who knows what will happen on Election Day in November), at least one historical expert is dismissing her accomplishments. “One of the cardinal rules for a first lady is to do no harm … in this respect, Melania comes up short,” Lynn University history professor Robert Watson said in an email to the Associated Press. “She will not be remembered in a way that so many beloved first ladies have been remembered.” Melania’s legacy will likely be a complicated one for the history books.
