Melania Trump decided early on in Donald Trump’s presidential campaign that she was going to be a background figure. She did not want to be the dutiful wife participating endless appearance, shaking hands, and trying to return to the White House. She preferred the privacy Mar-a-Lago provided her and her son Barron, 18, to the chilly reception they received in Washington, D.C.

That’s why it was surprising to see the former first lady break her silence during this election cycle with a post on X on Sept. 8. “The 2020 election results changed our lives forever,” she narrated the text on a black screen. “It impacted our quality of life, cost of food, gasoline, safety, and even the geopolitical landscape.” The seemingly political message continued, “America is more divided today than ever before. It has become increasingly apparent that there are significant challenges to free speech as demonstrated by the efforts to silence my husband.”

We should have expected an image of Donald Trump next, but no, Melania promoted her memoir, Melania, instead. It was the ultimate bait-and-switch move to generate sales for her upcoming book, due out Oct. 8. The stark, white graphic of her book with black lettering spelled out “Melania” across the front. Readers still have no idea what angle she’s going to take with her mysterious memoir, but it looks like she’s placing self-promotion ahead of her husband’s political campaign.

So far, she’s only teased morsels about telling her “truth” to her fans. “Writing this memoir has been a deeply personal and reflective journey for me. As a private person who has often been the subject of public scrutiny and misrepresentation, I feel a responsibility to clarify the facts,” she said in a Sept. 5 social media post. “I believe it is important to share my perspective — the truth.”

Her unique promotional campaign seems to be working since her book is already listed as a “#1 Best Seller in Political Leader Biographies “ on Amazon. Her publisher, Skyhorse Publishing, teased the details of her memoir in a press release to The Hollywood Reporter. “Melania offers an unprecedented look into her time as a First Lady who was born outside the United States — a role she embraced with honor and dedication. It brings readers into her world and presents an in-depth account of a woman who has led a remarkable life on her own terms,” the statement reads. “Melania Trump’s story is one of resilience and independence, showcasing her strength and unwavering commitment to her true self.”

It might be America’s only look at her time in the White House from her perspective — one that was rather controversial from beginning to end.
