Sticking true to her stark, black-and-white motif for her upcoming memoir, Melania, she asked, “Why do I stand proudly behind my nude modeling work?” She didn’t answer that immediately because she turned the question around on the viewer. “The more pressing question is: Why has the media chosen to scrutinize my celebration of the human form in a fashion photo shoot?” That’s when Melania gives an art history lesson to social media users.
The clip shows images of Michelangelo’s “David” and John Collier’s “Lady Godiva,” two masterpieces in the art world that feature the human body in the nude. “We should honor our bodies and embrace the timeless tradition of using art as a powerful means of self-expression,” she continued. The reaction below her post was exactly what you would expect — a mixed bag of responses from her supporters and critics.
One X account leaned into the GOP book ban controversy by asking Melania, “Per Republican standards, shouldn’t this book be banned?” Another user chimed in, “This is real? Not a parody or satire? Like omg???? Girl.” A fan praised her, “Do we love Melanis (sic) or what? The best and most beautiful First Lady ever. Yes, we love Melania.” And then there is one voter who stood somewhere in the middle of the argument, writing, “I don’t take issue with her posing nude for any reason. My concern lies with the MAGA crowd who overlook her nude photos while criticizing and shaming other women for doing the same. The level of hypocrisy is remarkable.”
Her nude photos were a hot topic during the 2016 presidential election cycle, but the snapshots really haven’t been an issue since then. British GQ did a nude shoot with Melania in January 2000 and editor Dylan Jones recalled in 2016 that the Trumps were pleased with the outcome.
“Given that she was obviously so keen to be featured in GQ, we came up with a rather kitsch and camp story for her to feature in,” Jones said of the provocative naked shoot in a Boeing 727. “We framed the cover and a selection of prints and sent them as soon as we could.” While Melania’s detractors might think her nude photos are embarrassing, she is telling everyone that she’s unbothered by the criticism.
