Melissa McCarthy Tells Ellen DeGeneres How She Got the Part of Sean Spicer on ‘SNL’

Melissa McCarthy and her husband, Ben Falcone, joined Ellen on Friday, where McCarthy told the tale of how she came to play White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Saturday Night Live. McCarthy was in New York when an old friend from the Groundlings, Kent Sublette — now a head writer at SNL — called and asked her to do it. McCarthy was surprised at first, but then it all began to make sense —and a couple of instantly classic SNL skits were born.

“I feel like I look so much like my dad, I feel like my dad and Sean Spicer had a baby and it’s me,” McCarthy joked.

McCarthy talked about the process of becoming Spicer.

“The weirdest thing is that you mess with your ears and it really changes the shape of your head,” McCarthy said, adding, “And then I got into it and was like, ‘Can I have eye bags?’”

Falcone, also an actor and comedian, may have learned something new about himself.

Falcone joked, “I guess I’m into Sean Spicer.”

McCarthy and Falcone have two daughters, Vivian and Georgette, who were there the second time McCarthy appeared as Spicer. They were not so impressed.

McCarthy said, “The girls were there the second time I did it — the girls were there. And they literally were like, ‘eeyikes!’”
