What Meryl Streep was compared to during an award presentation at the Emmys

(WJW) — She is one of Hollywood’s most elite actresses, but at Sunday night’s 76th annual Emmy Awards, Meryl Streep found herself being compared to a…piece of male sporting equipment. Let’s just say that for now.

During a portion of the evening when It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars, and real-life spouses, Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson were presenting the award for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series, the script took a turn.

McElhenney took the lead, saying “We are here to honor the comedic performances that hold everything in place. They show crucial support when it’s really needed.”

“Much like a jockstrap,” Olson quipped.

The audience began to laugh as McElhenny said “Yes, what? No, not like a jockstrap!”

“What you were describing sounds very much like a jockstrap,” Olson replied.

“No, it doesn’t!” McElhenney said, before continuing with the bit.

“These roles make sure everything stays secure. Without this support the whole package falls apart, alright this does sound like a jockstrap,” he said with a humored hint of panic, conjuring up more laughter from the audience full of celebrities.

“Are you calling Meryl Streep a jockstrap?” Olson asked her husband of 14 years.

“No!” a wide-eyed McElhenny quickly said before the camera cut to Streep.

Sitting in the audience, with a look of shock, the legendary actress slowly lowered her head and appeared to mouth “Oh God” as the audience roared with laughter.

Streep was nominated in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category for her role as Loretta Durkin in Only Murders in the Building. The award ultimately went to Liza Colón-Zayas for her role as Tina Marrero in The Bear.

Many took to social media to criticize the jockstrap joke while others laughed at Streep’s reaction. It’s not clear if she was actually upset or if she was just playing along for the camera. She is a three-time Academy Award and three-time Primetime Emmy Award winner, after all.
