Meryl Streep and Martin Short reignite romance rumors at Emmys 2024

Only lovers in this building.

Martin Short and Meryl Streep sat next to one another at the Emmys 2024 on Sunday at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles — amid ongoing romance rumors.

The pair shared several laughs together during the coveted award show.

But Short and Streep’s appearance was no surprise as, according to a September 13 post on X, there’s “confirmation via talent seating cards” that the pair will be “sitting next to each other” at the ceremony.

Television’s biggest night comes on the heels of the duo holding hands at the Season 4 premiere of “Only Murders in the Building” in Los Angeles last month.

But after Short and Streep first sparked dating rumors after getting cozy at the 2024 Golden Globes in January, the “Father of the Bride” alum’s rep shut down rumors.

At the time, Short’s rep told E News, “They are just very good friends. Nothing more.”

The comedic actor himself insisted that he and the “Mamma Mia!” actress were merely “friends” during an August interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Fans still feel that life is imitating art, since Short’s and Streep’s characters on the hit Hulu show strike up a romance during the show’s third season.

“It’s pretty unexpected to imagine a pairing of Meryl Streep with Martin Short and watch them find this incredible connection together,” John Hoffman, the series creator, told TheWrap in Aug. 2023. “And, as Meryl said, to not have it be twee or about the age or about any of that.”

“You see Marty step up in ways that are incredible and nobody works harder at it, comes in with more intelligence to the work,” he continued. “Then to watch him have these scenes that break your heart and have to be played with such dramatic poignancy, riding the line of keeping it comedic, keeping it mysterious … I’m amazed.”

Short is a widower, having been married to Canadian actress Nancy Dolman — with whom he had three kids: Katherine, 40, Oliver, 37, and Henry, 34 — from 1980 until her death from cancer in 2010.

Sources told Page Six in October that Streep and Don Gummer — whom she married in 1978 and had four children with: singer-songwriter Henry Wolfe, 44, and actresses Mamie Gummer, 40, Grace Gummer, 37, and Louisa Jacobson, 32  — had been quietly “separated for more than six years.”

“Only Murders in the Building” was up for 21 nominations at the Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series. Short’s co-star Selena Gomez was also nominated for her first acting Emmy for a primetime series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, but lost to “Hacks” star Jean Smart.

The third actor in the show’s trio, Steve Martin, also picked up a nom for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. “The Bear” lead Jeremy Allen White ultimately took home that win.
